Opportunity Knocks – Opening the Door to 2019

Greetings Moonbow Friends!

Here’s what I have been musing about lately…

 

Happy New Year Moonbow Family! I hope the transition from 2018 to 2019 flowed with ease and joy. By opening the door to 2019, we now get 12 months of opportunities to ignite what lights up our lives – through work, play, adventures, hobbies, self-care, selfless service, family time, friend time… you name it!  

A funny thing happened for me on New Year’s Eve. After a wonderful celebration ringing in 2019 with several friends and all of our children, I finally settled into bed only to fall into the trap of excessive mind chatter. I really should have been able to go right to sleep as it was already well into 2019. However, my mental energy was triggered so I allowed the rambling and noticed a sarcastic tone overshadow my stream of consciousness. I attached to the thought, “January 1st is just another day” and I became curious about why so much focus and weight gets put on the start of a new year. After all, shouldn’t EVERY DAY matter just the same? Musing with a mind chatter speed of about 40 to 50 thoughts per minute, some clarity started to appear when I recognized how January 1st gives me PERMISSION to take inventory and assess where I’ve been and what I’ve done – it is a tangible marker to quantify and qualify, to reflect and appreciate, to accept and forgive, and to plan and dream. The inventory becomes fuel for making EVERY DAY MATTER. Thankfully, this contemplation also gave me permission to fall asleep.

 

Over the past seven years, I have created a New Year’s Day ritual of spending time in meditation and envisioning the look and feel of the upcoming twelve months. I give myself permission to take a kind and humble reflection of the prior year and ask myself to choose Yes/No to the following questions: Is what I am doing (or have been doing) aligned with my soul’s purpose? Do I feel that the totality of my actions allow for a healthy evolution of personal well-being and service to others? The answers allow me to respond to the bigger question, “Ok, what now?” as I cultivate more clarity and direction.

I consider this self-inquiry essential preparation for the year ahead as I create a big map of possibilities. I allow a guiding intention to surface, such as “embrace change,” “trust you are enough,” “connect with others” or simply, “welcome peace”. The intention I place on my yearly map can then be woven into my day to day and moment to moment experiences that build the sacred substance of everyday living.

YOGA MUSING

New Year, New Challenges! I love Side Plank Pose because it offers me a playful way to challenge myself and asks my whole body to PAY ATTENTION in order to maintain balance with ease. Side Plank Pose, or Vasisthasana, is an asymmetrical arm balance, but encourages neutral postural integrity. For many students, Vasisthasana and its range of modifications, is a highly accessible arm balance. When aligned appropriately in the traditional expression of the pose, you navigate stability through the small foundation of one hand and the outside edge of one foot. Therefore, skillful alignment of the supporting arm and shoulder are key, as is the use of making two legs serve as one. Your trunk sways into balance as the front, back, and side bodies gently hug energy to your midline. Once steady, more fun begins as you explore ways to radiate length from the feet to the crown of the head, and also from the center of the chest to the extended arms. The top hand and arm are active and purposefully assist the whole of the pose to prevent sinking into the supporting shoulder/arm/wrist. The overall sensation in Side Plank can feel exhilarating. One can modify the pose in many ways – my favorite is to place the top leg in front, like a kick-stand. Now both feet can be of service in the postures. You can also explore variations of lifting the top leg or creating a Side-Tree Pose. Opportunities are many – Enjoy playing!
