Kindness is Key: An Irish Perspective

Here’s what I have been musing about lately…

On Sunday, I went to a lovely picnic at Jack Roberts Park in Morgantown. Autumn was in the air and the food was plentiful. With all the good stuff, the picnic was bittersweet - not the chocolate desserts, but the reason for gathering. You see, the event was a going-away party for someone special - Lisa Hynes. Next week, she leaves Morgantown for new adventures, and then at the end of 2018, she returns to her homeland - Ireland. For almost two years, I have had the wonderful opportunity to know Lisa as a yoga student, yoga teacher trainee, co-teacher, and friend. She is one of the main inspirations behind me choosing Ireland as the location for my 2019 Kindness is Key - Yoga Retreat. Although Lisa is starting a new chapter, I am grateful that our paths will continue to merge - from the Mountain State of West Virginia to the breath-taking cliffs and countrysides of Ireland. Lisa was recently in Ireland for a brief visit, so I invited her to share some pictures and words about her homeland and yoga. Read on and enjoy her delightful musings!

Lisa’s Musings
Kindness is key: Heidi is coming to Ireland!!!!

Surprise doesn’t really capture my response when Heidi shared with me her plans to organize a yoga retreat in the stunning county of Clare, in the west of Ireland. I’m from Galway myself, the county just north of Clare, so, I grew up looking across Galway bay to the rocky Clare shores. I still pinch myself to be honest, when I imagine Heidi stepping off the plane in Ireland, with her yoga mat, essential oils and joyful smile, for what is sure to be a beautiful retreat.

Really and truly, Heidi could lead a retreat on a race track and she would find a way to make it peaceful and nourishing! Luckily, the Kindness is Key Ireland retreat is not on a race track, but rather is a coming together of two powerful souls – Heidi, with the wild, rugged beauty of the west of Ireland. Whether you like to hike, swim, bird watch, run, horse-ride, eat & drink, sight-see or simply relax, Clare, and the surrounding areas really can cater to ever need. I should add one rather large exception...we just can’t cater for sun worshippers...Ireland is all about layers, as you’re very likely to encounter sunshine, gale force winds, and driving rain all in one afternoon! Embrace it!

I first encountered Heidi at her evening yoga class in BlissBlissBliss, a wonderful yoga studio in Morgantown, West Virginia. After just a few of Heidi’s classes I was in love with her and her style of teaching, relishing in the balance between energetic and more cooling practices, and her ability to weave in lessons from yoga philosophy that would fuel me from week to week. Needless to say, I did not hesitate when the opportunity arose to sign up for Heidi’s Moonbow 200-hour yoga teacher training at BlissBlissBliss! Along with a group of amazing women, Heidi led us deep within ourselves and the practice and teaching of yoga over 8 amazing and hectic months. I have taken many, many gems with me from this experience, chief among them, ‘and now the teachings of yoga’. This idea starts off a very famous and very old yogic text, called the Yoga Sutras. An unusual way to start text, right? Heidi referred to this concept constantly throughout our training, and for me it encapsulates her approach to yoga, and the approach I am trying to cultivate. ‘And now the teachings of yoga’ reminds us that we are always students and we are always teachers...every moment, every experience, every interaction is an opportunity to both exercise the resources you gain through yoga, including physical and psychological strength and flexibility, and realize the surface and more complex meanings behind the teachings of yoga. Every moment is a challenge and an opportunity to be observed and marveled at.

Come along to my homeland next September, and let Heidi (and me!!!!) lead you to beautiful Ireland for a retreat that will further you along whatever path you are on in life, by unlocking your ability to bring kindness to yourself, to others and the world around you.

YOGA MUSING

August 24th is the Harvest Moon - the first full moon after the Autumn Equinox. What a wonderful time to take pause and reflect on the abundance that is around and within you. What qualities are you harvesting speak your truth, shine your light, and share kindness and goodwill to yourself and others?

The simplicity of a mudra (hand position or gesture) can ignite intention and purpose, just as powerfully as Full Moon energy. The Pushpaputa mudra is an excellent one to practice for reflecting on and appreciating life’s abundance.

Pushpaputa is a Sanskrit word meaning “handful of flowers” or “offering of flowers”.

The Pushpaputa mudra is a hand gesture that promotes compassion towards others and ignites the energies of giving/receiving; sharing/caring; gratitude/grace.  Simply take a comfortable seat, rest your hands on your legs, and open your palms (see pic). Notice how your hands are in the shape of holding a vessel or bowl. Take 5 minutes to breathe deeply and smoothly, as you abide with the mudra and the following questions:

What do you wish to share? What are you receiving in abundance?
